Worried About Carbon Monoxide Exposure?
What Is Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas that can be extremely dangerous—and even deadly—when inhaled.
Where Does CO Come From?
CO is produced when fuels like gas, wood, charcoal, or propane are burned. It’s commonly released by car engines, stoves, grills, fireplaces, furnaces, and other fuel-burning appliances. When these are used in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas, carbon monoxide can build up quickly and pose serious health risks.
What Are the Symptoms of CO Poisoning?
CO poisoning can feel like the flu. Symptoms often include:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Weakness
- Chest pain
- Confusion
In severe cases, breathing in too much carbon monoxide can lead to unconsciousness or death. People who are asleep or intoxicated are especially vulnerable, as they may not notice symptoms in time to act.
Who Is Most at Risk?
Anyone can be affected by carbon monoxide, but certain groups—such as infants, older adults, and individuals with heart or lung conditions—are more susceptible to its effects. Each year, CO poisoning causes over 400 accidental deaths in the U.S. and sends more than 20,000 people to the emergency room.
